Urey, Harold Clayton (1893-1981), American chemist and Nobel laureate, best known for his discovery of deuterium, or heavy hydrogen, symbol D or 2H. Urey was born in Walkerton, Indiana, and educated at the universities of Montana and California.For his discovery of deuterium and his isolation of heavy water (deuterium oxide, D2O) in 1932, Urey was awarded the 1934 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
