Perutz, Max F. (1914- ), Austrian-born British biochemist, noted for his X-ray diffraction research on the structure of haemoglobin, which transports oxygen in the blood. Born and educated in Vienna, he emigrated to Britain in 1936 because of the unsettled political situation in Austria just before World War II.Perutz and Kendrew were awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
