Butenandt, Adolf Friedrich Johann (1903-1995), German chemist and Nobel laureate, born in Bremerhaven and educated at the Universities of Göttingen and Marburg. He isolated and studied the sex hormones oestrone (1929), androsterone (1931), and progesterone and testosterone (1934), determining their relationships to steroids. For this work he shared the 1939 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with the Yugoslav-Swiss scientist Leopold Ruzicka.
