1533 Born September 7 in London, daughter of Henry VIII of England and Anne Boleyn.
1554 Imprisoned in the Tower of London by her half-sister, Mary Tudor, on a false charge of involvement in Protestant rebellion. Professes Catholicism and is released.
1558 Proclaimed Queen of England on death of Mary Tudor.
1559 Protestant Church of England fully established.
1568 Roman Catholic cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots, flees to England, where she is imprisoned.
1570 Excommunicated by the Pope, who calls on Catholics to overthrow her.
1586 Plot discovered to assassinate her, and place Mary on the English throne.
1587 Execution of Mary, Queen of Scots.
1588 Philip II of Spain sends fleet to invade England - the Spanish Armada is defeated.
1603 Dies March 24. Succeeded by James VI of Scotland, James I of England.
