Veblen, Thorstein Bunde (1857-1929), American economist and social scientist, notable for his historical investigation of the economic structure of society and for his analysis of the contemporary economic system. Veblen was born in Cato, Wisconsin, and educated at Carleton College, in Northfield, Minnesota, and at Johns Hopkins, Yale, and Cornell universities. From 1892 to 1906 he taught political economy at the University of Chicago. He taught economics at Stanford University from 1906 to 1909 and at the University of Missouri from 1911 to 1918. He was on the staff of the New School for Social Research, in New York, from 1919 to 1926, when he retired.
