Ungku, Abdul Aziz

Ungku, Abdul Aziz (1922- ), leading Malaysian economist and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya. Ungku was born in London in 1922. He graduated from the University of Malaya, Singapore, in 1951 with first-class honours in economics and then completed a doctorate in economics at Waseda University, Tokyo. He served briefly in the Johor state civil service, before becoming a lecturer in economics at the University of Malaya (Singapore) from 1951 to 1962 and head of the economics department at the University of Malaya (Kuala Lumpur) from 1961 to 1965. He was subsequently dean of the faculty of economics and administration from 1965 to 1968 and Vice-Chancellor and Royal Professor of Economics from 1968.
