Work

Du Pont de Nemours, Eleuthere Irenee (1771-1834), French-born American industrialist, who in 1802 founded what was to become one of the world's largest business empires. He was a son of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours, and was born in Paris. He became a pupil of the French chemist Antoine Lavoisier in 1787 and entered the royal powder mills at Essone, where he was trained in the manufacture of gunpowder. When the French Revolution began, du Pont left the mills, and in 1791 he took charge of his father's printing business in Paris. He was a Royalist and, eight years later, emigrated with his father to the United States. Noting the poor quality of gunpowder then manufactured in the United States, he decided to manufacture explosives. He returned to France to get plans and models of French gunpowder machinery and to obtain financial support. In 1802 he established E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company near Wilmington, Delaware, and began to manufacture gunpowder. So successful were his operations that, at the time of his death, the du Pont factory was the largest of its kind in the United States.
