Hicks, Sir John Richard (1904-1989), British economist and Nobel Laureate, born in Leamington Spa, England, and educated at Balliol College, University of Oxford. He taught at the London School of Economics (1926-1935) and the universities of Cambridge (1935-1938), Manchester (1938-1946), and Oxford (1946-1965). He was knighted in 1964. In 1972 he shared the Nobel Prize for Economics with the American economist Kenneth Joseph Arrow. They were cited for "contributions to general economic equilibrium theory and welfare theory". In his book Value and Capital (1939).
